Container ship operator Seaspan is to install KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband 2.0 maritime communications system on 18 of its newest vessels, the companies have announced.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}Seaspan's managed fleet consists of 118 containerships representing a total capacity of more than 935,000 TEU, including 22 newbuild containerships on order scheduled for delivery to Seaspan and third parties by the end of 2017.

The company’s current operating fleet of 83 vessels has an average age of approximately seven years, and an average remaining lease period of about five years.

The system to be provided to the 18 ships under the contract with KVH includes a TracPhone V11-IP antenna, mini-VSAT Broadband connectivity, the IP-MobileCast content delivery service, and CommBox network management tools.

The TracPhone V11-IP is a 1.1 metre antenna that accesses both C- and Ku-band networks, providing download speeds up to 4 Mbps.

“We chose KVH for our newest vessels because of their dynamic and flexible one-stop communications and media solutions, and because they can provide us with a level of quality that addresses all of the factors that are so critical to ship owning and ship management today,” said David Kramer, director, fleet management, for Seaspan, based in Vancouver, Canada.

“At Seaspan, we require high-quality, continuous global connectivity for optimising operations, and cost-efficient content delivery services for attracting and maintaining the best crews possible.”{/mprestriction}
